Understanding Menu Permissions

What are menu permissions?

SEDRI LIMS makes use of a comprehensive role-based permissions system. The two sets of permissions present in the system are menu permissions, which govern read access and event permissions, which govern any action a user can take to add, edit or remove data.

Permissions are assigned to roles and are configured and managed from the role workflows. Roles in turn are allocated to users, so any user assigned a role will inherit the corresponding set of configured permissions.

How are menu permissions managed and configured?

1. Upon logging into SEDRI LIMS, we can see the main menu displayed on the left hand side of the screen. In this case, the role assigned to the user grants a comprehensive set of menu permissions, so everything is visible:

2. From the manage menu permissions window, which appears whenever adding or editing a role, the user is able to specify menu permissions.

3. Clicking a toggle grants or removes access to the corresponding area of the system - In this case access to the archive has been disabled:

Note: The toggle button will be blue if the permission is enabled and white if it is disabled.

4. Clicking Save at the bottom of the window applies the changes, which become effective upon logging in again.

5. Having removed "Archive" as a menu permission and subsequently logged back into the system, we can see that it no longer exists as an option on the main menu:

Note: It is important to remember that some menu options exist within parents, i.e. "Roles" is a subsection of "Administration".
