Process Today’s Specimens

See ????? for the context behind this and the Day 1 Bend Read actions.

Step 1

Select the Specimens option from the main menu.

Note: The visibility of main menu options is determined by menu permissions. For more information about configuring menu permissions, see: Understanding Menu Permissions.

Step 2

Select the Today’s Specimens filter preset just under the filter bar.

The button should turn a darker shade, as in the above image, and the specimen list should be restricted to specimens in the Specimen Received state.

Step 3

Assuming the current role has the corresponding event permission (see Understanding Event Permissions), the Process Today’s Specimens action is available both from the specimen row within the specimen list-view, and from within the specimen record-view, if displayed.

Select the Overflow icon (“…”) for the first specimen row.

Step 3

Select Process Today’s Specimens and the corresponding form will appear.

Note: The full specimen record appears on the left-hand-side of the screen, for reference to the specimen that is being processed. This is crucial as you work through the list of specimens without exiting the form.

Step 4

As the Action field defaults to Begin Culturing, you can simply select Next Specimen to update the specimen’s state to Specimen Culturing and move to the next item in the filtered list. The specimen details shown on the left‑hand side of the screen will update automatically. If all specimens in the list require immediate culturing, they can be processed efficiently by repeatedly selecting Next Specimen, reviewing the updated specimen details between each step.

For specimens that do not require culturing, or that must be rejected as non‑viable, set the Action field to Reject specimen or Other activity as appropriate before selecting Next Specimen. If you need to update the Specimen Condition, Specimen Weight, or any other custom fields, these can also be adjusted at this stage. In practice, such exceptions should be relatively uncommon, allowing the workflow to remain optimised.

Once the last specimen in the filtered list has been reached, there will be no Next Specimen option, but selecting Save will process the current specimen and close the form.

If you only need to process a single specimen, or if you wish to stop before completing the full batch, select Save instead. This processes the current specimen and closes the form.
