Edit a Specimen

The Edit Specimen action allows you to correct or update any information recorded during specimen creation or acknowledgement of receipt. This includes point‑of‑care details, specimen properties, and collection or receipt timings.

Step 1

Select the Specimens option from the main menu.

Note: The visibility of main menu options is determined by menu permissions. For more information about configuring menu permissions, see: Understanding Menu Mermissions.

Step 2

Assuming the current role has the corresponding event permission (see Understanding Event Permissions), the Edit Specimen action is available both from the specimen row within the specimen list-view, and from within the specimen record-view, if displayed.

Select the Overflow icon (“…”) for the specimen row corresponding to the specimen that needs to be moved.

Step 3

Select Edit Specimen and the corresponding form will appear.

Step 4

The first page displays the existing point-of-care details.  These are described as follows:

  • Patient Ref:  A read-only patient ID, for reference purposes only.
  • Client Organisation: The organisation providing the specimen for testing.
  • Admission Date: The date the patient was admitted to the client’s premises (in-patients only).
  • Diagnosis: Suspected patient condition.
  • Clinical Contact Phone Number:  The phone number of the clinician responsible for the patient.

Make any required edits, then select Next.  The following page should appear.

Step 5

The second page, entitled Specimen Attributes, displays the existing selections for the following specimen characteristics:

  • Specimen Type:  The type of specimen, e.g. blood, eye, stool, etc.
  • Specimen Site:  The origin of the specimen, if relevant (not present for all specimen types).
  • Specimen Condition:  The physical state of the specimen and its container.
  • Specimen Appearance:  The physical appearance of the specimen, if relevant (not present for all specimen types)
  • Existing Barcode:  Any barcode on the container that was not generated by SEDRI-LIMS.

Make any required edits, then select Next.  The following page should appear.

Step 6

The final page, entitled Specimen Timings, displays the existing values for the date and time of specimen collection and receipt.  Make any required edits, then select Finish to save all form data.  The form will close automatically and the updated values should be displayed in the specimen record-view and in any columns of the specimen list-view that were impacted.
