What are the uses of an Organism Preferred Name?
Preferred names for organisms allow for organisms to be referred to under different names. This is useful in situations where local names or common names differ from the taxonomic name of an organism. In these situations, a preferred name can be used to allow for easy identification of organisms. Preferred names are searchable and are treated exactly the same as the taxonomic name of the organism.
Note: Preferred Names are similar to Synonyms, however Synonyms only affect the searchability of organisms. If it is desired that the taxonomic name be visible in reports, but that the searchability of organism be augmented, it is more appropriate to use a Synonyms instead of a preferred name.
