Edit a Specimen Label

Step 1

Select the Configuration option from the main menu, followed by the Specimen Labels sub-option.

Note: The visibility of main menu options is determined by menu permissions. For more information about configuring menu permissions, see: Understanding Menu Permissions.

Step 2

Select the Specimen Label 1 or Specimen Label 2 row from the list, as required, followed by Edit Label from the action bar.  The form is identical for both specimen label instances.

Step 3

The first page of the label configuration form will appear.  This page, entitled Label Content, is concerned with what information should be included on each label, as opposed to how it is organised and formatted.

The various fields are described as follows:

  • Name:  Confirms the name and type of label being edited.
  • Include Linear Barcode:  Specifies linear or 1D barcode presence.
  • Include QR Code:  Specifies QR code presence.
  • Use Accession Number for Barcode:  Specifies whether to encode the specimen’s Accession Number or a randomly generated number when generating the barcode and QR codes.  Some external systems, such as diagnostic analysers, rely on scanning the Accession Number from the specimen label.
  • Include Barcode as a Number:  Specifies inclusion of the number used for the linear and/or QR code (be it the Accession Number or a randomly generated number) as a distinct field, below the barcode(s).
  • Fields to Include:  Specifies which, if any, specimen and/or patient specific field label(s) and value(s) to include.
  • Include a Border Around Each Label:  Specifies a thin, black rectangle around each individual label.
  • Number of Labels Per Row:  Allows multiple, horizontal labels to be printed with a single action.
  • Number of Label Rows:  Allows multiple, vertical labels to be printed with a single action.

Select the desired options, followed by Next to move to the next page.

Step 4

The second page of the label configuration form will appear.  This page, entitled Item Dimensions, is concerned with the size and organisation of individual items within each label.

The various fields are described as follows:

  • Height of Linear (1D) Barcode:  Specifies the relative height of the linear barcode in arbitrary units.
  • Size of QR Code:  Specifies the magnitude of the QR code in arbitrary units (the aspect ratio remains constant).
  • Display Barcodes Side by Side:  If both barcode types are included, this specifies whether they appear horizontally or vertically aligned.
  • Field Font Size:  Specifies the field label and value size (if any are included) using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Padding Around Barcodes:  Specifies the gap around any included barcodes using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Width of Field Names:  Specifies the width of just the name portion of any included fields using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Total Width of Fields:  Specifies the total width (name and value combined) of any included fields using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).

Select the desired options, followed by Next to move to the final page.

Step 5

The final page of the label configuration form will appear.  This page, entitled Label Dimensions, is concerned with the overall size and margins of each label.

The various fields are described as follows:

  • Left Margin Per Label:  Specifies the space between the left edge of the label and the start of content using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Top Margin Per Label:  Specifies the space between the top edge of the label and the start of content using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Width of Each Label:  Specifies the overall width of the label using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Height of Each Label:  Specifies the overall height of the label using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).
  • Bottom Padding Per Label:  Specifies the space between the bottom edge of the label and the end of content using standard web‑style size values (e.g., px, cm, mm or auto).

Select the desired options, then choose Finish to save the configuration. The form will close automatically, but the updated label settings will only take effect at the next login. See ???? for guidance on label printing if you wish to view the results of your changes.
