Understanding Laboratories

Laboratories within SEDRI‑LIMS can represent individual physical laboratories or distinct functional areas within a single laboratory; the precise mapping is entirely at the client’s discretion. SEDRI‑LIMS can support any number of laboratories within a single instance, or separate instances can be deployed for each laboratory if preferred.

The laboratory management page is a standard list-view, accessible via Administration : Laboratories from the main navigation menu (see below).  For details of the shared properties and capabilities of all list‑view types, see <link>List Views</link>.

The laboratory management page supports the following actions (subject to permissions):

  • Add Laboratory: Create a new laboratory.
  • Edit Table: Modify details of an existing laboratory.
  • Delete Table: Delete a laboratory (only possible if no specimens are currently associated with the laboratory).

Each laboratory record has the following attributes:

  • Name: The name of the laboratory as displayed in the list-view, as it appears for remote client selection (if multiple labs are hosted), and as included by default in a specimen report.
  • Language: The translation used when accessing the laboratory from within the system.
  • Organism Groups: The organism group(s) associated with the laboratory. A laboratory may be linked to any number of organism groups, and the combined contents of those groups are used when identifying organisms detected or isolated within that laboratory. If a laboratory does not perform organism identification, no organism‑group association is required.
