When installing SEDRI-LIMS, you have a choice of three major deployment modes:
- Single laptop or workstation
- Local server
- Cloud
For all three options, the same SEDRI-LIMS code is deployed and user access is via a browser such as Chrome, Edge or FireFox. Hence the user experience is exactly the same regardless of deployment mode.
Options (2) and (3) also permit access from any client device, be it phone, tablet or another PC, so long as there is wired or wireless connectivity to the system.
Options (1) and (2) do NOT require internet access, with option (2) only requiring local network reachability from client to server.
The three options are described in more detail in the following sections.
Single Workstation
With this option, the complete system, including database, is installed on a single desktop or laptop computer and NO network connection of any sort is required for configuration, administration or operation of the system. Despite the system being completely self-contained, however, access to the user interface is via a browser. It is a common misconception that if you are using a browser to access a web-page or web-app, that it must be hosted on the internet. This is certainly not the case.
Choose this option if you have a small laboratory with little or no IT infrastructure and no dedicated servers. As part of implementation, the target PC would be configured to encrypt the entire hard-drive, to back-up data locally on a schedule of your choosing and to write-up encrypted back-ups to authorized external drives, e.g. USB flash drive, on insertion.
Note that your single workstation can be configured to provide access to additional client devices, such as phones, tables or secondary PCs at any point if a local network is provided, at which point it becomes very similar to the "Local Server" mode (see below, but with the initial PC acting as the server.
Local Server
With this option, the complete system is installed on a server in your organisation's server rack, with access provided via your local (wired or wireless) network to any client device (e.g. phone, tablet, PC or workstation) for which the server is reachable. No special software or app is needed on any of the client devices as the system is accessed via a browser (any modern browser - we recommend Chrome or Edge).
While internet access is NOT required for this option. data security and back-up becomes the responsibility of your IT administrator.
Cloud
With this option, SEDRI-LIMS is hosted in the cloud and provided to you as a Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) offering that is wholly managed by us. There is no on-promise installation whatsoever; once the service becomes available, access is provided from any client device running a browser via your internal network and your internet connection.
Chose this option if you have a stable internet connection, are able to have your patient data hosted externally and would like to minimize your IT overheads.
